Twenty $25,000 Commissions Awarded
The Arts Council of New Orleans is excited to be working with some of the areas most talented visual artists to create works of art to be placed throughout New Orleans. Click here to see them all . In collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation ., twenty artists will receive $25,000 to create public art and to rebuild their artistic careers. Through the 2008 New Orleans Art in Public Places Commissions, artists from Louisiana and Mississippi who were affected by Katrina or Rita were eligible to apply. The Call to Artists was initially for ten commissions, but due to the extraordinary response, the artistic diversity and the high quality of the proposals, the opportunity was expanded to twenty-one commissions funded by the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Harrah's New Orleans Casino
Golden Column 1999 Robert Warrens; Painted Alumin Photograph: Neil Alexander
Placed in the architectural pediments of a local casino, Golden Column and a sculptural frieze by George Dureau rank among the largest public art commissions in New Orleans. Working wiht a budget that exceeded $250,000, the Arts Council oversaw project management from artists' selection to final installation.

Private Partnerships
Successful partnerships with private agencies and corporations have strengthened the growing collection of public art that enriches our city. The Arts Council has worked in collaboration with Amtrak, Audubon Nature Institute, Downtown Development District, Harrah's New Orleans Casino, Inc., Orleans Parish Levee Board, New Orleans Louis Armstrong Memorial International Airport, Regional Transit Authority, and Sheraton Hotel to reflect the spirit that is New Orleans.
